Prolonged Neurophysiological Effects of Cumulative Wine Drinking. (... a study that looked at how the brain is affected by alcohol consumed during more realistic social drinking situations--as opposed to the effects on the brain caused by drinking single, large doses of alcohol [something that has been studied more often].
The subjects who took part in this study drank three glasses of alcoholic or placebo red wine, 1 h[our] apart. Brain activity was then recorded for these individuals during rest and performance of a working memory task at two levels of difficulty.
The authors found that the effects [on brain activity] endured 3 h[ours] after drinking, whereas blood/breath alcohol concentration had decreased considerably and cognitive performance returned to normal. The authors suggest that these findings indicate that moderate social alcohol consumption has cumulative effects on brain function that persist for hours after chemical and behavioral indicators of intoxication have diminished. Other keywords and phrases -- background cortical resonant activity, cognition, consumption, EEG, electroencephalographic, EP, ERP, event-related potential amplitudes, evoked potential, neuronal populations, stimulus processing -- from the text of the abstract)

Eradication of Island Invasives: Practical Actions and Results Achieved. (... a concise review of research on and projects that have attempted to use eradication [elimination of the entire invading population] as a means of managing animals or plants that invade an area that they are not native to and then cause ecological and economic damage. The information reported came out of the first international conference on eradication of all types of introduced species ... held at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, under the auspices of the Invasive Species Specialist Group of the IUCN, from 19 to 23 February 2001.
Despite eradication being perceived by many biologists as generally ineffective, expensive, and potentially harmful to the environment and native species, the author reported that a surprising number of introduced populations have been eradicated, some at relatively low cost and without harmful side effects. The author briefly describes specific projects involving eradication of invasive insects, mammals, and plants plus eradication projects that have been the subject of confrontations with advocates of animal rights. Other keywords and phrases -- conservation, eradicate, exotic species -- from the text of the article)
